FALL/WINTER 2022

Continuing from the last season’s concept of "light", we focus on "things that affect us subconsciously". The Japanese term sen that we focused on this season has many meanings: line, boundary, outline, shape, figure, ray, route, level, flow, track, direction and so on.

 

The ukiyo-e artist Hiroshige Utagawa (1797 – 1858) expressed rainfall with sen. Japanese family crests and traditional patterns of simplified natural scenery composed of sen. There are numerous metaphorical expressions using sen in the Japanese language. Sen plays a significant and vital role in the expressive activities of Japanese people. Concentrating on the multiplicities of sen, like the ripples formed by rain on the surface of a pond, or waves lapping on the beach, and woven patterns found in bamboo baskets, is the source of inspiration for Fall/Winter 2022.

 

The Japanese term kintsugi which is included in the style names of a coat, a shirt and T-shirts, is a traditional Japanese technique for repairing ceramic and lacquerware. By decorating the repaired cracks and chips with gold, not only does it restore the functional value, but it also adds a new level of heightened emotional value by inscribing the object with notions of time, history and love. This collection expresses our respect for diversity through the aesthetics of Zen and wabi-sabi whereby defects like cracks and chips are transformed into objects of beauty.
